New phones at World Congress
The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona saw the launch of a number of new phones - some official launches, others apparently intentional press leaks – that add to the current trend for technologically advanced smart phones.
Among the most high profile launches was that featuring the Samsung Omnia HD, although a close second came the launch of the HTC Touch Diamond 2.
The Omnia HD is a lovely looking handset, a touch phone running on the Symbian platform, as opposed to the Windows Mobile operating system of the previous Omnia range. With the tried and tested Samsung TouchWiz interface system it should be an easy to use and very versatile device, with the familiar widget touch screen navigation that is very much of the moment.
The Touch Diamond 2 is the successor to one of the markets more revered handsets and HTC have spared nothing in presenting another excellent handset. The TouchFlo interface has received some worthwhile improvements – although it must be said it was already excellent – and this very neat handset promises much in terms of market impact for HTC.
An unofficial announcement saw the Nokia N86 – perhaps the most eagerly awaited phone of the moment – brought into the public eye. This handset features an eight mega-pixel Carl Zeiss camera, complete with xenon flash, with a 16million colour 2.6 inch screen, all the usual facilities and an 8GB standard memory, extendable to 16GB. The N86 is scheduled to launch, officially, in May.
Also unveiled in Barcelona was the LG KM900 Arena, set to launch officially in March. The KM900 is set to be the company flagship for 2009 and comes complete with everything that one could imagine: a 3D interface – in the form of a cube on the screen – is the notable innovation, and has already caused quite a stir in the industry ahead of the official launch date.
The World Congress is a prime place for manufacturers to launch new models, and the competition has been very intense this year as most of the major outfits showed new models. It remains to be seen which of the range topping models appeals most to the consumer.
