HTC Touch Pro 2 Review - Hard to Beat if You can Handle the Price

Among the group of mobile phone manufacturers that lead the market HTC are guaranteed to provide handsets that are stylish and impressive, and the Touch Pro 2 is no exception to that rule.

The handset is similar in style to HTC's own Diamond model, and is very similar size; those familiar with that model will instantly recognise the button layout and the 2.8 inch screen. With web browsing a priority these days on mobile handsets it is no surprise that this one is geared towards that too, and as touch screens are all the rage these days the touch pro 2 carries one of those by default.

High-speed downloading to the usual level is present, with GPRS and Bluetooth 2.0 incorporated. All of this, of course, should come as no surprise so let us have a look at what is special with this very neat and lovely to handle handset.

As with the Diamond, the Touch Pro runs Windows Mobile 6.1 professional and includes all of the accoutrements that come with that operating system. RSS feed readers and MP3 editor particularly useful, and video playback is excellent and of some note. GPS is accurate and browsing the web simple and efficient, and in case you forget that this is a phone calling quality is perfectly adequate as well.

What makes this phone stand out from its predecessors is the excellent keyboard; the handset features a slide out QWERTY keyboard that is similar in operation to that seen on the Google G1. It is simple to use and extremely functional and features all of the keys usually found on a standard full-sized keyboard. This really is a top-notch keyboard layout and one that will be hard to beat in the marketplace.

Shortcuts are launched when the keyboard is pulled into operation and these point to all of the functions that one is likely to use most frequently such as e-mail and browsing, messages and contacts. This function is well-designed and very useful and a knack giving the user the best possible service available. Notably, there is also a touch screen keyboard for use should that be your preference, and this is equally as well arranged as any other rival on the market.

The phone is great to handle and feels well built and well designed; although at 18 millimetres thick it may seem a little on the chunky side it also feels as if you have a real phone in your hand, not a flimsy and cheap item as many of the more expensive handsets on the market and to be these days.

The phone comes with 288 MB of RAM and 512 MB of ROM but with a microSD slot for expansion. This memory may sound very light in comparison with many rivals but it is not enough to put us off the other attractions of this phone.

As is often the case in modern mobile phones the buyer will be looking at how impressive the camera is and this one, at 3.2 megapixels, is not the most part in the market that is perfectly good for snapshots and also has an LED flash that is missing from many rivals. Focusing is easy and automatic and taking pictures is a pleasure rather than a chore. Video output is also available and the phone comes with the usual music player and FM radio attachment that are standard on just about all phones these days. HTC have made a small mistake, common among many manufacturers, but not equipping the Touch Pro 2 with a 3.5 mm audio jack and hence necessitating the use of the rather inadequate headphones provided in the package. An adapter can be bought, but it is high time the industry standardised this function.

As is the norm with phones of this capability battery power is not great; it will need charging at least every couple of days depending on how much you use the very able abilities of this excellent phone.
