Samsung M8800 Pixon Review

Posted by phonehunter 27 February,2009

The mobile phone market moves at such a pace that new innovations are introduced with each fresh handset, and the Samsung M8800 Pixon is the latest to incorporate what is seen as the holy grail of camera’s – an eight mega-pixel device. It has a lot to live up to given the beauty and sophistication of the rival LG Renoir KC910 and others, but Samsung are no strangers to such competition.

In terms of looks the Pixon is akin to a number of similar devices, but does not exude the out and out style of the Renoir; however, it is a good looking handset if not spectacular, but it’s not how it looks that matters to most. With a huge touch screen – a necessity in phone design these days – and the black casing it resembles most closely the sister Tocco, and with lightweight plastic used to make it in the main it is a nice phone to handle with interesting dimensions.

Weighing in at just 122g, this is a light phone in the class; it measures around 108mm tall by 54mm wide, and at just under 14mm thick is not the slimmest phone in its class. These sturdy dimensions give the Pixon a good feel of being well built, and while plastic is not usually the most attractive of materials it works well in this instance. All in all the dimensions and feel are very much akin to the class rivals, and it is about the same thickness as the rival Renoir and other similar handsets.

The usual call and end buttons are at the foot of the rather lovely screen, and buttons elsewhere facilitate shortcuts on the very easy to use menu. More, though, on what this handset can do.

With a 240x400 pixel screen supporting 256,000 colours the Pixon doesn’t want for capability in that area, and the familiar Samsung navigation system is very efficient and easy to handle. If preferred the phone comes with a stylus, but this is a matter of individual choice. However, it is the camera – quite naturally – that ranks as the selling point for this handset: eight mega-pixels, auto focus, face recognition, shake reduction, LED flash and so on – this really is an exceptional camera. Particularly fun is the panorama system – position for first shot and move through the panorama you wish to snap and you get a series of successive photo’s.

It’s  a superb camera, and more: a superb music player, excellent connectivity and quite ample memory and battery power take the M8800 to new heights, and with the competition coming thick and fast it needs to be suitably advanced so as not to lose ground in the coming months to new rivals.

We browsing is easy and well facilitated, and the phone has good colour resolution and all the features that one would expect of a phone at the high end of the market, as this one is. As the competition develops it is intriguing to wonder what the next genuine innovation in mobile phone handsets will be. Interesting is that while the M8800 has GPS and so on, it lacks the now very much required Wi-Fi capability. We are always amazed that manufacturers as advanced and regarded as Samsung can omit such a feature in this day and age, and surely it will let the Pixon down in the market place.

In summary, though, the Samsung M8800 Pixon is a very good high end phone, but is it the best? It suffers from comparison with the LG Renoir KC910 – an excellent all round device that does all this one does but with, perhaps, a little more in the way of style, but will draw custom from those who are familiar with Samsung systems and the excellent ‘widget’ provisions. We reckon that the handset will be ‘improved’ in time, with the possibility of it being updated into a Wi-Fi capable device a necessity before long.
