Sony Ericsson W705 Review - WiFi Walkman phone
The first Wi Fi enabled Walkman phone from Sony Ericsson – the W705 – is finally on the market, and is an impressive slide phone that is aimed at those who need high speed connectivity for music use.
A pretty if ordinary looking slide device, the W705 nevertheless looks sleek and stylish in a silver finish, but it’s what is under the skin that makes it different from the crowd.
Wi Fi ability means high speed downloading of tunes – a facility that will endear the W705 to an entire generation who have been brought up with digitally transferred music – and the hand set also features an HSDPA connection, allowing fast transfer when there is no Wi Fi service in the vicinity.
A 3.2Mpbs rate using HSDPA is perfectly adequate, and will satisfy even the most discerning of users.
In a phone that is firmly aimed at those who want a music player of the highest order it is perhaps no surprise that the W705 lacks a GPS system – this will not put off many of the target audience, for whom such a facility is hardly a priority. Google Maps is incorporated, as is a triangulation facility that can pinpoint your position – although less accurately than GPS – using mobile phone masts.
One strange omission is that of a 3.5mm headphone jack – curious indeed on a phone designed for the music lover. The W705 also has a 3.2 mega pixel camera - more than impressive and highly usable for videos – and is a nice 14mmm thick.
Well priced, the W705 aims to please the music lover who wants an impressive phone, and also looks good – an important consideration when the target audience is a fashion conscious youth!
This phone may not be a stunning device, and it does not break any particular new ground, but it is a nice device that does its intended job very well indeed. The music capability is second to none, as a Sony Walkman phone should be, and only the lack of the standard jack appears to present a downside. It will be interesting to see how this device fares in the face of stiff competition in the current market.
