T-Mobile adds more music

Posted by phonehunter 23 December,2008

The importance of music as a mobile phone selling and marketing point has been further emphasised with the announcement that T-Mobile, one of the UK’s leading providers, is adding further sources to its Mobile Jukebox service.

With the likes of Nokia currently providing an extensive music catalogue, T-Mobile have incorporated the renowned Last.fm into their already impressive armoury in order to keep up with the opposition, and it is a move that should help the operator to keep a toe in the busy market.

An interesting feature resembling a ‘store front’ will also be part of the deal, giving the user information on the artists being listened to among other further details. A recommendation service based upon the users declared interests will also be part of the new service.

T-Mobile’s current internet platform – known as ‘web’n’walk’ – will be the access point for the service, and with further information to include news of releases and dates of performances the Last.fm service promises to boost the profile f T-Mobile in the mobile music sector.

A spokesman for the company stated that research has given an insight into the requirements of the music loving mobile user, and that simplicity and ease of use come to the top. With the added bonus of the recommendation system and access to new artists the Last.fm service will surely provide very popular.

EU looks to tax TV and GPS devices

Posted by phonehunter 23 December,2008

The mobile phone world is waiting on a decision from the European Commission, a governing department related to the European Union, on whether or not it will decide to impose extra tax tariffs on certain mobile phone handsets.

The tax will relate to those devices that incorporate a GPS receiver or TV capability as standard, and would be imposed as an import tax on these handsets to the tune of a rumoured 14 percent.

The industry has responded with comments that the price of GPS enabled devices or those with TV capability may have to increase in retail price by as much as 25%, something that will not be received well in what is an increasingly competitive market place.

Although many devices that are capable of providing TV feed are already subject to a sliding scale of import taxes throughout the European Union countries, mobile phone handsets are as yet unaffected, a decision granted in 1996 at the onset of the Information Technology Agreement that governs such details.
