Sony Ericsson looks to high end

Signs that the mobile phone industry is feeling the effects of the economic downturn are beginning to show through, with the recent success of the LG Cookie a pointer and the recent announcement that Sony Ericsson, for a long time one of the market leaders, is looking at a very definite shift in approach for the coming year in order to combat the credit crunch effect.
Many have speculated on the effect the recession would have on the mobile industry as it is no secret that it is a market based on people’s tastes and desire to improve. However, with belts being tightened across the board spending on a new model of mobile may well be deemed frivolous and unnecessary when one already has a perfectly usable handset.
It is interesting, then, that Sony Ericsson has expressed an intention to shift its emphasis to the top end of the market, focusing on high profit lower volume lines rather than those that sell in greater quantities for a lesser return. This approach is one echoed by other markets, as it will remain so that those with money will be the wealthy, and they will continue to spend in the face of recession as they have the means to do so.
LG Cookie in sales bonanza

While the mobile phone market shudders at the onset of the credit crunch it would appear that at least one manufacturer has hit upon a winning format, and is looking to capitalise on the runaway success.
The handset is the LG Cookie, a touch screen device that is available on prepay tariffs, and it has catapulted the manufacturer LG right into the midst of the big players in the market.

The appearance of the LG KS360, the company’s first social networking handset, has made a major impact on the handset market and left manufacturer LG with a major supply problem as the stock flies off the shelves.
Another example of the popularity of the pre-pay market, the LG KS360 is proving more popular than anyone had forecast and is currently flying in the face of the current economic downturn. This, along with the runaway success of the LG Cookie, will please the manufacturer greatly at a time when many of its rivals are having to look at radical market changes to combat the expected downturn of the n ext few months.

Christmas sales down 7%

The run up to Christmas saw some very interesting sales figures in the market for mobile phones, with the forecast downturn in sales being evident among some more unusual trends.
Even though the market fell dramatically up to the Christmas period, the year 2008 was more profitable than the previous one thanks in no small part to the appearance of the iPhone and similar smart phones, but the demise and struggle endured by many non specialist retailers has impacted heavily on the sale of handsets.
The downfall of Woolworths, a long time mobile hand set retailer in the UK, in the run to Christmas has been well documented, and with other major retailers also feeling the pinch it is no surprise that sales of mobile phones have not figured highly on the shopping lists of the populace.
In any time of recession the first things to go are luxuries, and a new mobile is very much a luxury if one already owns a perfectly adequate handset.
