Virgin Opens Doors in Plymouth

Posted by searchaphone 22 April,2009

The juggernaut Virgin brand has taken another step forward with the launch of its second concept store “Virgin Media” in Plymouth, New George Street. As can be expected, the store is packed with the usual mobile offerings including broadband (the super-fast fiber optic kind), landline and TV on demand services.

The slick red and black logo and mod interior are recognizable and comforting to those of us who have come into contact with previous Virgin offerings. According to Mark Schweitzer, spokesperson for Virgin Media, “We’re delighted to officially open our brand new Virgin Media store in Plymouth today. The store offers people in the city the chance to experience the latest Virgin Media and Virgin Mobile products in a fresh, new and exciting environment.” By combining classic mobile phone offerings with various related media and wireless products, the marketability and longevity of Virgin as a whole and Virgin Media in particular is significantly raised. It shouldn’t be long before users of multiple Virgin products start seeing cross-benefits such as loyalty services and discounts.

Mobile's One-Touch Button Feature Rats a "Perp"

Posted by searchaphone 22 April,2009

A 16 year old miscreant from Peoria, Pheonix has been caught and charged for the theft of an electronic device, stolen from a car thanks to his phone’s 911, touch-button feature. The mobile, apparently in his pocket at the time, dialed the number of the fuzz at the precise moment that he was detailing his exploits to cronies. From this point on, it was a simple process of signal triangulation and sending a squad car to fetch the unfortunate boy who was reportedly standing with the booty in his hands.

According to Mike Tellef, spokesman, the boy was reported to say "It was bolted down - I had to rip it out. It took all my energy to lift it out of the car." One can only imagine the expression on the face of the call operative who was obviously recording every blessed word. Reports speculate that it “may have been a cricket phone” while the recording has friends complaining that he could have opted for a Blackberry instead. Although the unfortunate chatter box has been charged for a felony vehicle burglary, he has been released into the custody of his guardians.

Nokia's Easy Meet - Informal and Business At A Distance

Posted by searchaphone 22 April,2009

The business practice of meeting in coffee shops, on trains, restaurants, pubs and possibly park benches has taken another step forward with Nokia Beta-Labs’ new release, Easy Meet. Easy Meet is a cross-platform function that allows webinars (the web version of seminars) to take place in the comfort of… wherever you are.

Although this seems like the perfect product to aim at the business segment, Nokia has set their sites at those who love to show slides of their holidays, family events and such. This angle is apparent in the video they provide, coaching users on the best ways to organize little meetings for Christmas gifts. The application, in addition to being cross-platform, is said to be browser based, although few have reported much love from Windows mobile devices and iPhone seems not to like it much at all.

Get it all on your mobile, no really…

The application of mass media and the use of existing technology to do so, has reached new and sometimes ridiculous heights. Mobile handsets are becoming less like communication devices and more like science fiction “teleport/speaker/information units” a la “Star Trek”. As a company by the name of Tapioca, based in San-Diego USA can attest, the constant need for new information and never-ending updates continues unabated.

Having signed with some of the largest media chains in the country, users of the Tapioca service can access radio clips, weather, sport and news updates among many other titbits of random and sometimes questionable information. The new use of existing technology seems to be a trend that will continue to find new areas to stick. When the mobile was originally invented for example, the texting application was merely added as a perk, like the calculator. The reason was that although most people may not use it, some may buy the phones for the idea of an extra feature. Imagine the squeals of delight by developers and manufacturers when it took off!

Use Your Mobile While Driving, Let Your Mobile Drive you.

Beta tests are currently being run by Trafficmaster to introduce Smartphones. With existing hardware already present in most mobile phones, the introduction of this snazzy, if not so new idea has been a long time coming.

The software, known as SmartNav, among various perks and functionality allows you to navigate by talking to an actual person on the other end. This call back to ancient methods is slated to work better and faster as human beings will trump machines any day when it comes to trying to hang a left into a river. Although the test version is only compatible with S60, Blackberry and Windows Mobile, its application is likely to garner widespread appeal over the not so beloved tinny, synthetic voice with matching “global village” accent. Although the exact market of users is unknown, it’s likely that mobile phone navigation will gain popularity with young urbanites who may consider their existing mobile handsets slightly more usable and affordable than the old mounted sat nav.
